How to Select Breeding Stock
Selecting Breeding Stock
Weighing and tagging the calf is the first thing that needs to be done if performance testing. John B IV was taught by ranch foreman, Gene Taber, the correct way to work a newly born calf is to keep the calf between yourself and its mother. Never hit the cows or act afraid. IV has had cows regurgitate on him, bite his hat and lick his face while he works a calf. It also helps to have close contact with the expectant mother cows weeks prior to her calving.

Show cattle go from one extreme to another. Usually neither one is correct. EPD’s are one of the best tools to evaluate cattle. However, they can also be misleading.
To pick the best bull for your cows or the correct replacement heifers for your ranch, use visual appraisal, weights, heights, and numbers. At the Diamond C we also use good, common sense. Buy from someone you know and trust who’s environmental conditions are similar to your’s.
